UNM PeacePal Course Global Engagement

The Spring 2013 University of New Mexico Service Learning Class was a great success.  Taught by PeacePal Founder and Executive Director Sarah Wilkinson, Africana Studies Professors Dr. Jamal Martin and Dr. Steve Bishop -- the class focused on the Stamp Out Malaria service learning initiative.  Students were very engaged and gained hands on experience in the development and implementation of a global service project.  Next year, the UNM PeacePal collaboration will continue, this time with a class that is offered in both the Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 semesters called Global Engagement

The Jewish Community Center (JCC) Bookfest & Author Series 2012 hosts distinguished Navy Seal and Charles Bronfman Humanitarian Winner, Eric Greitens.  His talk is entitled THE EDUCATION OF A HUMANITARIAN, THE MAKING OF A NAVY SEAL.  According to the JCC website, "When he was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford, Eric Greitens felt he had an obligation to be part of a military capable of preventing genocide, and that he had an obligation to help restore lives, livelihoods and purpose to those who had been mangled by the machinery of war. The NavySEALS was his 'fist' and The Mission Continues, a non-profit he started to challenge returning vets to serve and lead, is his 'heart.' As a person who has 'walked the walk,' his message is particularly meaningful for young people."  For more information or to make a reservation, you may visit: http://www.jccabq.org/main/jbm.php
Seating is limited!  $10 in advance, $15 day of the event, $5 students with I.D.

First Annual Albuquerque Couch Crash

First Annual Albuquerque Couch Crash!

Thursday, October 4 - Sunday, October 7, 2012

Coinciding with the first weekend of the 2012 Albuquerque International Baloon Fiesta, Couchsurfing Albuquerque will sponsor a Couch Crash! Couchsurfing is a diverse network of over 3.6 million individuals from all over the world who are active travelers dedicated to building goodwill through shared travel.  Couchsurfers embrace cultural differences, open their homes to new friends, and encourage others to pay it forward.

A Couch Crash is an opportunity for a local Couchsurfing group to showcase their city to 'surfers' from around the world.  What better way to start building a global community than through entertaining events that check out local sights and prompt visitors to spread the word of your city's energy.  We quickly come to realize that we share more similarities than differences.  That welcoming spirit is what the Couchsurfing community is about.

Youth are invited to participate in two Couchsurfing events!
On Friday, October 5 from 5:30-7:30pm at the Big Brothers Big Sisters Facility (2500 Louisiana Blvd NE, ste 200), there will be a poster-making session for the "free hugs"  event the next morning at the Mass Ascension of hot air balloons at Balloon Fiesta Field.

On Sunday, October 7 from 10:30am - 12 noon at Roosevelt Park (Sycamore & Lead in Albuquerque), Couchsurfers and interested youth will be making hula hoops to keep!  This event -- which will also include brunch and games -- will be sponsored by local businesses, and proceeds will raise money for PeacePal and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Albuquerque.
